The relationship between the author and the octopuses she's known is core to this book that examines what it might mean to be other and sentient.

Really truly gorgeous and emotional. I loved this.

3.5 stars. Fantastic stories and fascinating info, but I was hoping for more on the topic of consciousness.

This felt a lot less about octopuses and a lot more about the author, and as such, I didn’t learn much from this book. It felt like 90% of it was just the author’s musings on octopuses.
Additionally, I would have thought there would be more consideration or exploration of the effects and implications of capturing wild octopuses and raising them in captivity, especially with how reverently the author seems to view them.
It may have been an easy read, but it fell really short for me.

Interesting book. I learned a lot about octopus. My main takeaway though, is that we really shouldn’t be keeping these brilliant animals in captivity. Much more of a memoir about the author’s time with various octopus and other sea creatures than an exploration into consciousness.

If you want to learn about octopuses, this book does that. If you want to learn about literally anything else, this book does not do that. (Disappointing, given the blurb gives the impression that you'll draw connections between octopuses and humans, and the nature of how we emote and connect.)
