I need to collect my thoughts; but first, I need to collect my heart from the floor. Then, I can tell you what this book is about.

Dark, ashy, lonely, dead. Roads, overgrowth, fear, dread, starvation, cold, shivering. Dragging on, slow, challenging, pain, sickness. Cannibalism, cultism, guns, stealing. Stubborn old man who trusts no one, innocent annoying child. When you are kind and trusting, sometimes the world returns the kindness and trust.

I listened to it, rather than reading a hard copy, so maybe that had something to do with it, but I really didn't enjoy the book. I found my mind wandering and I just wasn't that excited or interested...

I’ve seen this book a lot while book shopping and it’s always caught my attention so I finally decided to read it. I knew that a book about a father and son barely surviving in an apocalypse was going to be bleak, cold, and sad, and it definitely was.

The book was slowly paced and the characters not having any names besides “The man” and “The boy” really contributed to the empty and hopeless atmosphere that was created. The writing style was really unique and perfectly fit the mood of the book. The decision to not use any quotation marks made it a bit difficult to follow conversations in the beginning, but I got used to it.

I’ve seen people describe this book as boring, and I can definitely see why someone would think that because there was not much other than walking, talking, and surviving. However, I really enjoyed it and it had many heartbreaking and depressing moments that made me stop reading and process them before continuing. I recommend this if you don’t mind reading a slower paced book that feels dark and devastating.

This is the first Cormac McCarthy book I've read and am looking forward to reading more. The true genius of this work is that while it has a post-apocalyptical setting, one would never classify it as a sci-fi novel, since the main theme deals with what defines the concept of humanity. Philosophically, imagine a cross between Robinson Crusoe and Lord of the Flies.

The plot is simple. Father and son walking down the remnants of a road, reduced to the simple basics of survival. Their interactions with each other and with the world, such as is it remains, shapes their spirit--especially that of the boy's.

The prose is sparse like Hemingway and the thoughts often stream of conciousness, like a readable Joyce. McCarthy crafts such an authentic story that at the end you are riddled with fear and despair and the faintest glimmer of hope.

Would heartily recommend this book to anyone.
