The horror was well-paced and left me in constant dread. Although the plot took a long time to pick up, once the really horrifying parts started, it kept me really engaged. The author did not pull punches, there was a lot of shock value, but then again I was morbidly fascinated with it. The main flaw was that the book was steeped in white, upper-class religious values that at some points detracted from the book, and while it is critical of a lot of those values, it espouses many others. I really enjoyed the prose: it was imagery-rich while still using simple language, although many parts of the book had unnecessary paragraphs full of description that I skimmed over to get to the continuing plot.

Very disturbing... but it's supposed to be like that. Can't exactly say I enjoyed this book, but I was certainly pulled into the story, enough to read it super fast because I jus had to know what happened next! I'd say it's pretty immersive and well written, and the way it ended definitely has me interested in reading the next book in the series. But yeah, it's pretty uncomfortable, and sad; if you've read it and hated it, I totally understand why. Wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

Why do people like this book and why is it a “classic” of some sort?? The writing was terrible, the story was way too long, the incest - just why? I read this because it was mentioned in <i> Monday’s Not Coming</i> and also because I saw someone else who enjoyed the audiobook but this was just not it for me.
