4.5.

As much as I am OBSESSED with the musical, I really wanted to give this book a 5.

The only thing that is stopping me from doing that is those little sections that have a sentence bigger. I believe it is too let you know that it is an important sentence. I just didn’t like re-reading the same sentence. It is silly, I know but that’s just my thought ☺️

The rest of the book was great! I learned a lot!

"He was a scapegoat. A scholar.
Respected. Reviled.
A genius. A fool.
A penniless nobody who became one of the world's
most powerful men.
He believed in the rule of law. He lost his life in totally
illegal fashion."

I mean I have no idea how to review nonfiction but here goes:

It was well-written, though it was not really like a story, more like facts and years being thrown at me, especially for the war section, but I definitely liked it and will try to read it again some other time?

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary." --James Madison

"Alexander always feared the excesses of the mob. This is where the devil emerged. The best safeguard against this was something he called 'an aristocracy of merit': people who were intelligent, honorable and experienced."

"Ben Franklin, the oldest signer, made an observation about the sun carved into Washington's chair: 'I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting Sun.'"

A great biography on Alexander Hamilton. Plenty of depth but not as dense as Chernow (which is incredible but requires a pretty big commitment to get though), plus lots of back matter on everything from Hamilton's family tree to the sugar industry in the Caribbean that should should spark further curiosity.

When Martha first announced Hamilton, I was thrilled. I couldn’t wait to see Hamilton through the eyes of such a spectacular woman.

Filled with notes and photos, Revolutionary is as much the story of the birth of America as it is Hamilton’s story, including the messy parts. Taking over what is now the US was not so great for the indigenous people on this land and Revolutionary explores that. It also doesn’t shy away from Hamilton’s flaws (which are plentiful). There’s a quick look into the people around him.

For a history book, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The way Martha lays it out kept me continuing through the audiobook (which I loved!). I also learned quite a bit. It’s funny how little we learn in school about how our country’s values came to be. I ended up buying a signed physical copy because I loved it so much!

Brockenbrough's passion and love for her subject are apparent. Her version of Hamilton's biography is underscored by it; her extensive work is obvious.

This is the best biography of Alexander Hamilton I have ever read!! It had awesome information and quotes that I loved. I would recommend it to anyone who loves history, or just is a really big fan of the musical Hamilton (like me!)

I thought that this was a good biography for teens. It definitely takes his side - Jefferson and Madison are not given flattering descriptions - but I think it covers his life well and keeps the reader interested. American history is put in as needed to understand the situations Hamilton finds himself in. Author's notes at the end provide more information about the time and place as well as the big ideas in the book. There is a bibliography and sources list for those interested in more information.
