This is the type of Young Adult fiction I like!

This book has actually renewed my faith in YA fiction. I used to really like YA fiction in high school and I assumed I just stopped liking it, but this book has renewed my faith in the genre.

Turns out I don't hate YA, I just hate a lot YA books. But it is good to know that good YA still exists!

Thank you  Sonora Reyes for renewing my hope in finding YA books that I will enjoy 😭.

I loved Yami, Bo, Cesar, and Jamal (I read this via audio so some of these might be spelled wrong).
I liked the realistic approach to family relationships and dynamics. I think this handled and portrayed a hard situations in a believable and well rounded way.

I think Yami's relationships with her mother, brother, and father, were representative, real, and human.

I loved every part of this book, would recommend!

God. Just, like, this book is so perfect. It is so lovely and so dark and so hopeful. The central protagonist, Yamilet, practically leaps off the pages, and while I personally found myself most entranced and represented by her brother Cesar, the carefully constructed cast of characters is all-around absolutely excellent. Highly recommend.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. Devoured it in half a day. The character development was just 🤌🏻💋
When her mom ended up supporting her, I bawled. Hysterically. Full on sobs at 1 in the afternoon
The way the author draws you into the narrator’s life leaves you feeling so connected to the events that happen to her and her family members. Hands down one of the best YA novels I’ve read in a long time.

It’s been a while since I’ve loved a YA book this much. It is a peeve of mine when YA books present content in a way that is outside of the maturity level of the intended audience. Reyes tackles so many important themes in such a tactful way that is accessible to young adults. She does not infantilize the reader by shying away from heavy topics, but rather addresses these topics in a way that feels relateable to the perspectives of young adults. Nuanced portrayals of racism, class disparity, adoption, bullying, suicidal ideation, and homophobia, all brilliantly written into one book. I wish I had this queer little book during my adolescence.

The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School was so good. The cast of characters was dynamic and the setting of catholic school really brought to the forefront discussions on race, class, immigration status, religion, sexuality, and sexual orientation. Very intersectional. As someone who transferred to Catholic school for a few years, many of Yamilet’s experience rang true for me as a Person of Color. I absolutely loved Bo, and as a transracial adoptee, I see myself reflected in her. The conversations she had about embracing her culture on her terms really resonated and the author wrote these sections very well. My only critique of the book was that it felt a little long, but it had a big pay off in the end. I found myself laughing and crying throughout the book.  There was some gutting parts. Yami, Bo, and Cesar’s experiences as queer teens of Color truly demonstrated the uniqueness of everyone’s journey.
