I've read this book probably about 6 times now and each time it gets better. Be prepared to get sucked in completely in part 2. Part 3 will be when you won't be able to put it down.

I couldn't help but compare 1984 to The Giver, and that's not a bad thing. They were both beautifully written (in different ways) and featured fascinating dystopias. Orwell's 1984 was incredibly clever; the physical and political atmosphere was described with so much conviction and the characters were interesting without being necessarily likable. I love that kind of complexity in a novel. Additionally, I appreciate how straightforward the plot was. Orwell got his point across without having to drag the plot. I'm not sure if I would have picked this up if it were not a requirement, but I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys clever and thought-provoking stories.
