A quirky little novel with a little bit of magic, a little herbalism, a little romance, a little homey goodness. A great winter's afternoon read.

I absolutely loved this. How have I never read Mary Stewart before??
A quiet tale of a lonely child, growing into adulthood and possibly encountering magic? It's great.

"Since this is not a tale of midnight witchcraft, but a simple, a reasonably simple, love story, it is fitting that the final chapters should open on the morning of a glorious day."

This isn't like the hard gothic novels that Catherine Moreland would stay up all night reading, but something soft, something simple. This isn't a criticism, it's actually really lovely. I'll check out Steward's other writings in the future.

I really enjoyed this - especially once I had realised that Bad Things weren't going to happen to Gilly and it wasn't going to end in tragedy. This is a magically-inflected story about a young woman who inherits her aunt's house and what she discovers when she goes to live there. It's quite gothic and very tense at times but has a nice satisfying ending that will appeal to readers of romance I think. Be warned - if you don't like magic in your books, this one is not for you.

"I suppose that my mother could have been a witch if she had chosen to."

"I stayed within myself and endured, as silently as I could."

“Give me time to be myself, know myself, become a little used to happiness. The rest will be up to me.”

"Happiness comes back, in the end."

I enjoyed this book a lot and connected with the protagonist because I felt that her and I were very similar. She is introverted and shy and prefers the company of animals over humans, and she loves spending time in nature. She's also quite lost in her own world as a kid and has a lonely childhood. Her "fairy godmother" helps her have her own happily ever after.

A comforting and magical read, but the ending was a bit abrupt and boring.. I was way more interested in the magic and mystery than the romance, which felt very rushed.

A book of its time, set in the early fifties. Today’s young reader would probably find it very old fashioned
