Quite sometime since I read a Mary Stewart book but as soon I saw it in my library and realized that I had not read this, there goes my resolve to focus on my TBR. Thornyhold is kind of different book than her usual fare, well of course there romance and mystery but both these are very low key while the focus on the book is the self discovery of the heroine Gellis or Jilly who comes to Thornyhold and thereby discovers her strength and power. A drama enfolds with the local witch and a widower with his son completes the tale.

3.5 stars. I adore books that go into ridiculous detail about cozy old houses and overgrown gardens, and I wish this book had lingered there longer rather than veering into an abrupt romance. It was well written, though, with just enough magic to add some pleasant whimsy.
Just got myself a second hand copy of this charming little book. First read it when it came out in the late 80's. Great read for a cold november night.
* 3.5
I was going to give it 3 stars because it did entertain me even though it is very slow and nothing really happens. But then in one of the last chapters it does clarify that it isn't a witch tale, but just a very simple love story and I agree with that. I wish they had put that in the cover as a warning because the two halves don't completely make a whole.
