This is a pretty dark mystery series, but I'm enjoying it so far. Jane is an interesting character (although I'm still wondering when Isles becomes a main character?). I also like that they take place in Boston!

Još jedan odličan triler odlične Tess!

Another solid effort, but no real time has been spent with Dr. Maura Isles. Not as tense as The Surgeon either, but I'm looking forward to reading onward.

I had so many different thoughts while reading this book.

First, the book series and TV series do not closely resemble one another. While some names are the same, personalities, distinct characteristics, and other things regarding the characters are very different. Maura has finally made an appearance but very minimally, and she is more a "Morticia Adams" than the fashion-forward girly girl we see on TV. Jane is also much more guarded, and driven by the "I'm-a-female-in-a-man's-world" line of thinking that she becomes off-putting at times, where on the show she is tough and assertive but not so over the top that you want to smack her.

Also notably, Korsak is still married and has a child, Angela and Jane really don't get along, Tommy's name is Michael, and Frankie is in the military and isn't even around. Plus, he's Angela's favorite.

The upsides of character development in this one were that I didn't hate Agent Dean by the end (I just have an indifferent distaste for him on the show) and I love the way Jane and Korsak's relationship was developed through their being thrown together as partners from different precincts and through his recovery from a heart attack.

So, all in all, like "The Surgeon," "The Apprentice" was good in its own way. Slightly a different story, but still engaging. There weren't any parts where I felt the story got slow or stale, though the reoccurring themes of smelling necks and locking door locks were a bit repetitive.

For anyone familiar with the show, the storyline of this book mirrors the pilot episode. You really could jump into this without reading the first one and not be particularly lost. The last few chapters are just as suspenseful as the climax moments in the show, which is always a mark of good writing if it keeps you riveted and allows you to imagine what's happening as if you have a movie screen playing in your head.

An equally creepy and thrilling follow-up to The Surgeon!
