I actually thought this was better than the Surgeon. The characters meshed and the story flowed. I think I will enjoy this series.
Rizzoli seems to be on the verge of softening a little. She can be very off putting. A strong woman is good but an abrasive person is not.

This book is a definite improvement on the first book in the series. A lot of the blatant misogyny in the first book (when discussing Rizzoli as well as other characters) is gone, which I appreciate. The author is clearly trying to get at the ideas of sexism and internalized misogyny within the police force; however, I am not sure she succeeds. Although many of Rizzoli's actions are based in her identity as a woman in a male-dominated role, the way the author has written her makes her come across as rather unlikable.
This book focuses less on the specific investigative details of the case and focuses instead on the impact of the case on Rizzoli personally, which is an interesting lens, but leaves me wanting. There were several places throughout the book where I thought there were obvious investigative steps that could have been taken. Isles is also not yet a main character, but I am hoping that happens in the next book. I do not hope that Thomas Moore returns as a character.
Overall, in this book, we see Rizzoli grow a lot of depth as a character; however, she is still written within the confines of what I see as a misogynistic lens, which makes me like the book less. I do find myself enjoying the story and it is definitely very creepy.

Graphic: Death, Sexual violence, Murder
Like this author, couldn't put book down once I started.
oh I enjoyed this book. I've watched the TV series these books are based on, so I wasn't sure how I would feel about reading the books. But of course, the books give more detail. And I enjoy that so much.
I can't wait to get the next book.

What a dreadful cover on such a good book! I liked this one better than the first, I think. I was expecting, from the series name, that there'd be a more equal focus between Rizzoli and Isles, but the latter was very much a secondary character here. From the blurb for book three, however, it seems as if she gets a bigger role there, which I would appreciate. I would also appreciate, to be honest, a crime where the victims weren't primarily women. The writing here is so intelligent, and so frequently aware - especially of the difficulty of being a woman in a job more commonly held by men - that the repeated use of sexual assault victims and murdered women seems a bit like low hanging fruit. I appreciate that the author is mirroring investigator and victim, and she makes some interesting points here, but this is a well resorted to all too often by crime writers, and it's beginning to feel a little repetitive even after only two books.
All that being said, I still really enjoyed this. The writing is intelligent, as I said, and I do enjoy reading about women in law enforcement. It gives a different perspective, and the minor theme of predatory similarities in those who hunt criminals and consume crime stories is well-taken, if not entirely original.

Jane Rizzoli, the terrific detective character created by Tess Gerritsen, is back in the second Rizzoli & Isles book. Beginning a year after the resolution of The Surgeon, Rizzoli is tormented by a copycat killer. At first, she's the only one who sees the parallels, including an FBI agent who arrives uninvited. The autopsy work by Dr. Isles proves her right, and puts her in danger.
Rizzoli is a complex and troubled woman, struggling for acceptance in a male-dominated profession. She feels forced to deal with her fears and doubts alone, in spite of offers of help from friends. Ms. Gerritsen has crafted another excellent mystery, including her trademark medical knowledge. Tense, fast-paced, and well written. Five stars all the way.

This book picks up perfectly from the first one. It's basically the pilot to the tv series that this book inspired. I enjoyed every minute of reading this book and couldn't put it down. This is my favorite book series thus far!
This book was FINE, I'm just not sure why everyone is giving the books in this series 4 and 5 stars. I'd give them 2.5-3ish.
(FYI, you definitely have to read The Surgeon before reading The Apprentice. You'd be lost in this book without having read the first in the series.)
