I probably would have liked this book better if it wasn’t a love letter to NYC.

I decided to read this book because it was featured on the Libby/Overdrive “read together” online book club. I knew nothing about it and maybe judged it as bubblegum. But I was in the mood for light, so I gave it a go.

And then this happened: I enjoyed every minute of this book. It made me smile, laugh a little. It was light reading, yes, but it was incredibly well-written. Skillful plays on words that speak to the author’s command of the language. It had a great story, in which the characters actually evolved, and had a romance that is realistic with a refreshingly strong female lead who doesn’t let her man treat her improperly, but also isn’t superhuman. The main man is also a good guy: nontoxic masculinity for once. How nice to just have a healthy normal relationship in a romance novel!

So I highly recommend this. It goes to show that light reading doesn’t need to mean crap. This is excellent bubblegum reading.

DNF after I finished over half of the book. Felt very slow and couldn’t connect with the characters.

Great book! And the perfect distraction on the day after the election. I read the entire last 120 pages in one day and I was riveted. There were so many surprises!

I loved the characters, especially Reid, and the storyline about Meg and Sibby’s strained friendship and how they repaired it. Meg had a whole epiphany about the right way to fight, and the fights she needed to start, continue, and finish and I found that very insightful.

It was also a funny book - there’s this great part where a couple of guys act like jerks to her on the subway: “On my way off I discreetly stuck my gum to the strap of his backpack, but unless it has the power to expand and seal him and his douchebag friend into a suffocating, chewed-up cocoon of my feminist rage, it’s a pretty hollow victory.”

Also I loved reading about a character who does hand-lettering as her job. It made me want to pull out all the fancy pens and markers I bought when I started bullet journaling and thought I could learn to hand letter.

In summary, lots of fun, great romance, you should absolutely read it!
