Land of Milk and Honey by Jane Jensen is An Elizabeth Harris Novel. Detective Elizabeth Harris is a homicide detective in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (in April 2015). Elizabeth is called out when a whole Amish family is found dead in their home. Elizabeth notices that there are empty milk glasses around the kitchen. When they check out the cows in the barn, they discover that they are sick. The police are hoping that this is just an isolated incident. But then more victims turn up. What is going on? Dr. Glen Turner from the CDC is called in to help with the investigation. Glen works closely with Elizabeth to help find the cause of the problem. It seems that someone is targeting the Amish. Can they catch the culprit before he racks up a higher body count? Elizabeth comes up with a plan to foil the perpetrator. Join Detective Elizabeth Harris on her latest case in Land of Milk and Honey.

Land of Milk and Honey was a very good novel. I liked the writing, the characters, and the setting. The mystery was interesting and unusual (very unique method of killing as well as scary). This book grabbed my attention and held it. While I liked the mystery, I was able to solve it early in the book. I picked out the culprit as soon as the person was introduced. I did enjoy following the clues in the story to see if I was right. The book had a fast pace that suited the storyline. I give Land of Milk and Honey 4.5 out of 5 (I lowered a bit since I was able to solve it so early in the book). It has an especially sweet ending. I look forward to the next book in An Elizabeth Harris Novel series.

I received a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest evaluation. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Quick Thoughts: This is the 2nd book in this series and the mystery was really good. That is where this series shines--the Mysteries. It is a great combo of good old detective work and balance with working in the Amish community where they shy away from the English. I generally stay away from Amish settings but Jane Jensen makes it interesting. I am starting to warm up to Elizabeth and the ending gave me hope that some of the "personal angst" is over. That really is my only complaint but like I said I think most of that is over. I look forward to book 3.

Audio Thoughts:
Narrated By Rachel Fulginiti / Length: 6 hrs and 57 mins

Rachel does a great job with this series. She makes everyone sound natural in their settings from young Amish children to hard-nose detectives. I recommend this series on audio.

The mystery is engaging and the characters are great, but the switching back and forth between first and third person doesn't flow well at all.

This book was an easy read. When I picked it up from the library, I didn't realize it was a book in a series, so I'll have to go back and read the first. The mystery kept me guessing throughout the book, and the ending was great. Initially I picked up the book because of the Amish topic (I love Amish literature!). This book wasn't the typical Amish book that I read because it really didn't have a lot of their beliefs come out, it featured ex-Amish (and happy about it), and the "watcher" was a foul character when it had the "watcher's" perspective. Overall, it's a good read.
