The beginning was really good, but it lost me when it turned toward American exceptionalism. Also I didn't like the way otaku was presented.

I was really excited to read this but the style in which the book is written doesn't sit well with me. I had high expectations but I only made it a couple chapters in until I couldn't force myself to read it anymore. Maybe one day I'll return to this book but as of now it is on my did not finish list.

It's just . . . boring. I'm sorry. Basically every speaker is unpleasant or grating or pretentious and comes across as impossible to like, the entire text reads like someone read a geopolitics textbook alongside a zombie story and threw them together, the military jargon is so unbelievably dull, and the whole book is just too bleak to find any enjoyment in (which, I get is sort-of the point, but . . . God).

Usually zombie books are just too depressing for me, but knowing that humanity wins in the end made the horrors described bearable. The people telling their stories are alive after all, so you know that there is some semblance of a happy ending... right?
