read this with more patience and context than i have for any other lispector, and got a lot more out of it. i really appreciated max's point earlier this week about reading for the feeling of the sentences instead of the meaning, and i tried to strike a balance between sitting with each line enough for it to inhere some meaning, and letting myself just experience the strangeness. this is making me want to reread the other stuff of hers i've read, with this same appreciation for her goal of unsettling our reading experience and pushing us towards new ways of meaning-making. i feel very interested in the psychoanalytic reading of this books in terms of a shattered/dualistic psyche. i feel a lot of empathy and sorrow for macabea as well :(

Wow, what a unique voice Clarice has, her character in this book, Macabéa is incredibly unique and penultimately herself without ever changing even right up to the point of her death. She is odd and a bit out of it but undoubtedly free inwardly which is hard to find these days! Definitely give this a read for a thought provoking read. Stays with you long after you’ve finished it.
