a transformative read. lispector's writing is sincere and gripping, filled with wit and honesty.

as a reader, i feel like i'm part of the narrative, trying to make sense of the character's reflections and sensibilities alongside the author. the sentences flow effortlessly, making it seem like the story is revealing itself word by word. the plot doesn't point out anything out of the ordinary, yet it goes inward, touching on intimate human reflections and sentiments. it highlights life's mundanity and its quiet complexity in a way that feels both subtle and profound—a simple and unknowing life with a still yet epiphanic conclusion.

this book isn't just something you read. it's something you experience and keep thinking about long after you've finished. it leaves a lasting impression, making you reflect on your own outward existence and your built inner world.

Absolutely outstanding - obviously this is in translation but the language is just so incredible. I found myself beginning to read it out loud at times which is about the highest compliment I can give to the use of language in a novel.

The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector is a novel that pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I am glad I read it! Lispector writes the story through the lens of a novelist who is attempting to tell the tale of a poor young woman, Macabéa. The narrative is fascinating, as Macabéa is incredibly naive yet strangely intuitive and attuned to her surroundings. She navigates life without any family, working tirelessly day after day in Rio de Janeiro, where she encounters a range of intriguing characters, including Olimpico (hated him) and the fortune teller (super interesting part of the story). The writing style is unlike anything I have ever experienced before—it pulls you in and keeps you engaged. Despite its depth, it is a short read (less than 80 pages). Definitely worth checking out!

I'm not really sure about my rating yet, or even what i fully think about this book. But I've been thinking about it, since the few days I read it. I did enjoy reading it, even without grasping it completely, and I already want to go back to it.
