"The Hour of the Star" evoke introspection by concentrating on issues such as loneliness, identity, and the true meaning of life. Lispector make us to think about the lives of those who are disregarded or undervalued, particularly those who are poor or different, through the character of Macabéa. We are left wondering whether any story or life can ever be fully comprehended because of the narrator, Rodrigo S.M., who presents the story in a detached and almost icy manner. The book challenges you to consider the deeper meaning of life and the people that society frequently forgets, even though it doesn't provide simple solutions or a tidy conclusion. Long after you finish reading it, you will still find it to be a deep and thoughtful story.

"All the world began with a yes."

[perhaps minor spoilers toward the end of the review, but honestly, I think there is only one real spoiler for this book, and I won't drop it here.]

Thoughts on Hour of the Star? Beautiful book. I think it's only 4.5* because the narrator is not that interesting (betimes slight incel tendencies)... maybe Macabéa deserved better, like stop calling her ugly, dude!

Macabéa herself is an absolute icon. The narrator and everyone else constantly make her life out to be miserable, but she persistently resists that notion by being happy. she knows her life isnn't anything special, but she enjoys it anyway. Out of all the characters, she has the strongest heart: trusting, grateful, generous, thoughtful. Daring to dream, and yet enduring, no, appreciating life as it is.

Only when she is made to believe that her life should be more, that she has to strive for prosperity to achieve 'real' happiness, does she begin to doubt her current contentment. Only then does she falter. Makes one wonder what would have been had she never gone to see that fortune-teller...

Anyway, movie stars... oh gosh, can Lispector write or what?

"What is the weight of light?"

PS: already second-guessing the rating... maybe 5* in the future...

I'm disappointed I couldn't appreciate the brilliance or the meta aspect of this novel that many reviewers talked about.

DID NOT FINISH: 23%

The rambling voice of the narrator was a bit much for my taste.
