I don’t blame the translator at all because I can tell that they really did try their best to do this story justice from how beautifully the words flow together. It’s just Lispector’s style of writing. I got this from the translator’s afterword:
“Because no matter how odd Clarice Lispector’s prose sounds in translation, it sounds just as unusual in the original.”
So from my understanding, the narrator is still annoying as ever in Portuguese? Lmao. The entire time I was like, errr, excuse me? Can you kindly gtfo and just tell the story already? 🙄 Stop self-inserting yourself, man.

I’m not baffled; I’m annoyed. 😂 I don’t know—this book is just not worth the hype from those who recommended it to me. I must, however, admit there are some beautiful pieces of writing worth highlighting in here despite the misery porn theme. I think this is a hit or miss book. Unfortunately, it is a miss for me.

still not sure I’m intelligent enough to fully understand and appreciate clarice lispector’s work but its great to catch glimpses of her poetic way of writing, especially women like macabea in the hour of the star ~ she’s whimsical, charming and completely unaware of it, in a world of her own and unapologetic about it
