For my read-the-world challenge, Lispector’s The Hour of the Star was my selection for Brazilian literature.

A story within a story? Lispector’s introspective confessional? A pointed sociological commentary? An avant-garde masterpiece? I’m not sure what I just read but I can tell you that it’s full of life. So filled with life that I could barely keep up: Lispector’s writing is simple but it has undoubtedly the highest thought to word ratio of any novel I have ever read. It took time to digest. And if I’m being honest, I’m still digesting it and will be for a long while.

Lispector’s writing is remarkable - it’s deeply reflective and philosophical while remaining accessible and relatable. There is so much within this short novel that leaves you thinking infinitely about authorial responsibility and reliability, the purpose of existence itself, female and working class struggles, and an endless and unfulfillable search for identity. I’d love for this to have been longer, but maybe it’s short length is what makes it so impactful. You enter Macabéa’s life for a short period of time, and are abruptly forced to leave it.

Quero sentir o sopro do meu além.
