A compelling beginning to the story of Maerad. Strong characters and beautiful settings in a well thought out world of magic and darkness. I first wanted to read these books when I was 13, and honestly I am glad I didn't until now, almost a decade later, because I worry my younger self wouldn't have been able to appreciate them well enough.

The beginning reminded me a bit too much of Le Guin, and plotlines were a bit predictable, but overall it was a fun fast read, and even left me teary a couple times. I'll definitely read the rest.

This book managed to capture one of my favourite elements of fantasy: epic journeys across fictional landscapes. I know for some people, this may be boring or slow to read, but I personally loved it. I loved the main protagonists and the 'traditional' fantasy atmosphere throughout the novel.

DNF: I really wanted to like this book, but about 1/3 the way through I put it down. The writing is good, but the plot moves entirely too slowly. Maybe I’ll give it a go another time.
