A really interesting and well-crafted standalone fantasy. I was surprised by the depth of the world and the broad cultures in just a single volume. The plot is rather straightforward, but I appreciated that because it left more room for the worldbuilding. For picking this up on a whim, this was a perfectly delightful read.

I really loved the first half, exploring the first kingdom and closely following the lead's gender and cultural exploration, along with the political intrigue. Unfortunately, it seems like that is all tossed out the window as soon as they get on a boat. I was far less interested in the prophecy-chasing second half, and I only finished it because I wanted to see the main character's gender journey come to a conclusion.
