The beginning of the book was so promising! I couldn’t put the first chapters down. And then the pace just…stopped. I almost didn’t finish it. There were many missed opportunities for character development (which was shallow at best) and plot development (or advancing the plot in general) that got lost in strange editorials choices and strange side storylines that were also never fleshed out. The author made some creative attempts at changing up narrative, but it ultimately was distracting and overdone (I ended up skimming and skipping most of these parts). I thought the story had huge potential but didn’t follow through, which was very disappointing.

Beautifully written and told in two timelines. The past unfolds in parts as the current protagonist finds new information. It was so compassionately told with a lot of heart.

This book took me a bit to get through. I felt like the shifting from past to present didn't work as smoothly as I would have liked. But, as someone who is trained as an archivist, I appreciate the way that archival research (and all its hiccups and oddities) was presented. The twists were really heartbreaking and well-planned.
