This book was well written. Significantly better than Mexican Gothic. Almost felt like a completely different writer. For people who enjoy noir, this is probably a 4 or 5 star read. Even though Mexican Gothic was not executed as well as this, I prefer Mexican Gothic. This novel was not my vibe.

I don't really know why I suffered through this.... I guess by the time I realized I wasn't enjoying it, I felt I was too far in to give up. It was boring and I couldn't keep track of any of the secondary characters. The pace picked up a bit in the last 20% of the story and then ended on a flat note.
Would've been 4/5 but the ending caught me so off guard and made my jaw drop, so it's 5 stars for this one. Moreno-Garcia has joined the ranks of "Clarissa's comfort authors", sitting with Anthony Ryan and Neil Gaiman having the most wonderful discussions.
Anything written by her, no matter what genre, will be something I'll enjoy wholeheartedly. So happy I found her through the hype over Mexican Gothic.

kinda bummed i didn’t like this more. granted i am not the biggest fan of the mystery genre, but this was just not exciting
i wouldn’t say it was COMPLETELY boring because the plot was good enough aka where is this girl but i actually hated the ending
i love the author’s other work so i was excited for this one but it really makes me just want to donate the book and forget i even read it 😔
