Pretty good! I enjoyed this, thought the two main characters and their like, orbit of each other was interesting. Thought it was bold to have this main character woman be so like, just kind of petty and self-interested, and I thought that generally made her more interesting and her parts of the book more fun- like I DO think it's more relatable and compelling to have her motivation be "pay me my money so I can get my car back from the mechanic" rather than "oh no!! I am so genuinely worried about this neighbor woman whom I have met one single time." i do believe before Ive said that it's good when women are shitty and mean and I continue to think this
plot dragged a bit in the middle I think, like there's a long period of just both MCs going back and forth to different places and IMO telling the readers information we could easily guess but you know. Still enjoyable and a good read & I would rec

In early 70’s Mexico City, Maite is living a life oblivious to what’s going on around her. She is 30, perpetually single, works as a secretary in a law firm, listens to expensive import vinyl, and reads romance comic books.
One day, her neighbor with whom she has never spoken begs Maite to take care of her cat while she goes out of town for a few days. When those few days pass with no word from the neighbor, Maite does her best to find her. This adventure leads her into the world of 1970s anti-Communist exploits, student revolutions, government crackdowns, and people who spontaneously disappear in the night.
A total departure from Mexican Gothic, this is a pulp romance set in one of the most tumultuous times in modern Mexican history. It’s well written and exciting but not at all what I was expecting given Gothic, which I read earlier in the year.

Great page-turner!
I have read very few books set in Mexico City and Moreno-Garcia's words transported me to the streets of El DF in the 1970s. Times were changing and not changing and all that came to life through these characters.
The plot was intriguing, the twists kept me reading and not everything ends happily. Great read!

Silvia Moreno-Garcia is just absolutely incredible at atmosphere. She will absolutely suck you into the past and into the mystery.
Disliked the characters and the plot felt sluggish
