Perfect palate cleanser after my struggles to stay focused on the first Dark Star book. Mexican Gothic remains one of my favorite reading experiences to date, and I’ve wanted to read her other books ever since. I knew she didn’t stick to one genre, so I kept holding off on trying out her other books for fear of disappointment/not living up to the enjoyable experience I had with Mexican Gothic. I needn’t have worried. While Velvet Is the Night does not reach the same caliber as Mexican Gothic, gosh is it fun. I love the way this author synthesizes the traditional tropes of different genres and breathes new (Mexican) life into them. I’m really looking forward to seeing how else she does this with her other works. There’s so many different reasons to love a book—being a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience sometimes gets overshadowed by more measures weighted more heavily. But inside a fun book is where those other measures can sometimes be best conveyed to a wide readership. She just nails it!

I liked this! It stayed tense throughout. The characters weren't always enjoyable, but that was part of their allure. I'd say it was better than Mexican Gothic but Gods of Jade and Shadow will always be my favourite.

I found this book incredibly slow, the pacing was off for me, the only thing that kept me reading was to find out what happens to the 2 main characters, Maite and Elvis.
Both Maite and Elvis were drawn beautifully but most of the other characters just blurred into one. I could imagine myself in Maite’s apartment and in her world but sadly that didn’t save this book for me.
