A beautifully illustrated and written poem set in WWI. We read it every year as a family.

Beautifully illustrated and told, Duffy effortlessly provides two poignant sides to the same story. The humanity which reaches right from the page conjures up immediately a harsh winter and innocent men who know not what the next day might bring them. As with all of her work, Duffy has created something which is more than just a jumble of words in a page made to fit a rhythm or style. Instead there is something which rewinds the clock, makes history pulse with the present that we too might experience that moment in which life and peace was the concern.
Looking someone in the eye for a day as an equal instead of any enemy is perhaps one of the most significant things that can be captured on paper. Not an easy thing to do, but achieved here without parallel.

A strange and captivating moment in history, encapsulated in a simple yet resonant poem; it speaks of the timeless notion of coming together at Christmastime.
