Ever since I re-read this during the initial outbreak of the COVID pandemic, I've come back to re-read the series almost annually. Each time, I am struck by just how dark and gruesome it can get, and just how young everyone around the story is. Definitely one of those series that changes wildly as you grow.

This was such a good book. For me, it even beat Harry Potter. I recommend this to everyone. Your mind will be changed about animals. I created an emotional connection with animals and people, so when they died, I felt sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sad.

This was my favorite series as a young child, and a reread in my late 20s proves that it really is everything I remembered it to be (and more).
Graphic: Blood, Gore, War, Violence, and Death
Moderate: Animal death, Panic attacks/disorders, Child death, Death of parent, Pandemic/Epidemic, and Torture
Minor: Injury/Injury detail and Colonisation

After finishing Harry Potter with my 8 and 11 year old we were on the search for a new series to start. I was sure we wouldn't find anything that would stand up to such an epic series but we LOVED these. We have come back to them again and again. I would recommend these to children and adults, alike.

did u read the underland chronicles as a child and gain a premature yet surprisingly nuanced understanding of the physical, mental, and ethical costs of war n wonder how this became children’s lit bc the cast is tragically young, but also wonder why more people haven’t read it because it hits the mark in every relevant aspect of storytelling, being so fantastic and full of heart that it’s left emotional handprints all over ur childhood, or r u normal ?
anyways: using this to indicate my reread of the series. this doesn’t need to b rated bc obviously it’s a childhood masterpiece

Story appropriate for about 5th grade and older. By the author of The Hunger Games. Good fantasy story, some violence, but doesn't go into detail. I enjoyed the series, but the ending wasn't satisfying. I think that was part of the point though...
