I liked this one a little less than the first. I liked that Alex is still depicted as an impulsive youth, and that the power dynamic with his handlers is shown as not fun at all (dare I say...borderline abusive?). However, even with the suspended reality of a young teen being an agent, the author REALLY leaned into the James Bond image this go-around. In addition to the sinister baddie and malformed hench-person, we now have a femme fatale and some quips that range from clever to corny. Not to mention, this number's evil plot was REALLY far-fetched. Insanely so. 1950s pulp science-fiction far-fetched. And a cliffhanger!! Ugh.
Yes I'll read the next one, they're fast.

The absence of Kyra was a shock. There was an interesting section at the back of the book detailing how Anthony Horowitz comes up with his villains though 😃

One Alex Rider walked over to the hole and looked down.
The other Alex Rider lay on his back, two floors below. He wasn’t moving. The flames were closing in.

A boy with short fair hair and brown eyes, wearing a denim jacket, T-shirt and jeans, walked to the edge of the roof and began to climb down.

I liked the first book in the series. the plots and action is great. but reading this one made me realize the writing was really choppy. i think they changed some of it from super English to American (dollars instead of pounds, seriously?) and that might be part of it. but the story and intrigue were fun like always.
