I had a really hard time getting through the 140 pages it took to get to the plot that was described on the back of the book. Two whole pages were devoted to transcribing a 4chan post with minimal punctuation, when we got maybe two sentences of lead-in to what should have been a shattering plot twist had there been enough build up. Ila’s perspective and motivations got lost, which made the events of the return to the House and the epilogue feel rushed. The pace and editing didn’t do the story justice (especially if you’re someone who has a hard time with poetry or reading when there aren’t a lot of paragraph breaks).

That being said, the characters were compelling and difficult in a way that felt honest to their experiences. I loved the literal dual POV moment describing the absolute horror of what really went down between Alice and Ila in the House; the two column format was so unique and gripping I wish I could have read both simultaneously. Unfortunately, I just didn’t find myself enjoying the rest of this book as much as I wanted to.

What a brilliant & rageful albeit explicitly horrific & triggering exploration of trauma, fascism, transness, transphobia, racism etc utilized through haunted house metaphor. A really powerful read holy moly

I think that this book was just not my cup of tea. We read the introduction to it in my "Literary Hauntings" class last semester, so when I saw it at the bookstore I picked it up because I recognized the title. It is a refreshing, political take on the haunted house trope and the idea that ghosts stem from trauma, but it was just really, really heavy. The sexual violence and horrific language and situations were a lot to get through, but the symbols really shine through in terms of the representation of fascism, transphobia and hatred. I think that it was well-written in that sense, but there were some moments where it was overwhelmingly and honestly the aura didn't feel necessary.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It was way darker than I expected, with elements of classic gothic fiction meshing with lots of body horror and political discourse. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did an amazing job bringing the horror element to life, but it also felt a little bit like spending hours and hours in the worst parts of the internet. There were some parts that were very stream-of-consciousness in a way that almost worked, but mostly felt overdone and repetitive and like the author accidentally copied and pasted a blog post in the middle of the book. Ultimately, while I appreciate what the author was trying to do, the gratuitous violence and hatred outweighed everything else and I didn't end up liking this one very much. (The trigger warnings are listed at the beginning of the book, but be aware that they are hit pretty much constantly.)
