The content warning at the start of the book is crucial. Readers really need to know what they're getting themselves into with this book, and it is so dark, so graphic, so chilling. There were moments that made me feel physically ill. The narration is brilliant and nuanced. I don't know that I can recommend it because it is truly horrifying, but it's important and I know I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

Absolutely brutal.

This book made me deeply uncomfortable the entire time I read it. I don't regret reading it, as it is a good look at how easy it is to fall into fascist ideology, especially for young people and marginalized individuals.

It is not for everyone, but if you have the stomach for it, it's worth a read.

I see what this book is trying to do and I appreciate the message, but I deeply disliked it. I think it kind of lost me from the start when it felt like it had to tell me its themes straight up before chapter one. And then it turned out to be my least favorite kind of horror, the utterly mean-spirited kind that loves introducing innocents to be sacrificed to "raise the stakes" when the stakes were already raised and it just feels like snuff. There was a lot of strong writing and it propelled me forward to finish it in a day. But as far as its horrible vibes, the ends didn't justify the means.

A phenomenal novel, if not entirely enjoyable, it is a harrowing exploration of trauma through bigotry and intergenerational fascism can lead to prejudice and self-loathing.

i’m sorry but genuinely what the fuck was this.

i feel like the message just got completely lost and the haunted house metaphor was trying to be so many things all at once that i just. couldn’t understand.

also so much fucking trauma and it just felt a bit like layering all this awful stuff for shock value and to justify that something bad happened.

idk the concept was good and maybe i’m a bit too dumb to understand it all but this just didn’t really feel like a coherent story
