One of the most visceral, fucked up, horrendous things I've ever read. An absolutely unhinged fever dream. I am in awe. The audio book version is truly sublime.

Horrible. Nauseating at times. One chapter is physically impossible to read as intended. Five stars
(no, really, read the content warnings)

Wow, this was insane but oh so good! A beautifully written horror, this made me feel so many emotions from disgust to hope to anger to sadness. There’s so many layers to this novel and I highly recommend anyone interested in queer horror to pick this up ASAP!

I loved the references to The Haunting Of Hill House, and the use of a haunted house not in a ghosts sense but more a deep prejudice embedded into a place. I think that’s the most believable theory of hauntings and this book showed that really well!

Surface level, this is a haunted house book. But it is soooo much more than that. It’s a dark and gruesome, slaps-you-across-the-face kind of book that forces you to look inwards and at the state of the world around you.

This wasn’t for me. I didn’t like the language (tons of trigger warnings here for hate speech, vile language, sexual language, etc etc), I didn’t get the metaphor (fascism, racism, transphobia, antisemitism are bad yes but what did they have to do with the haunted house), I didn’t like the characters (both of them need therapy and god are there literally ONLY unhealthy relationships in this), I don’t know why we had to be so racist/ transphobic/ antisemitic/ etc to prove a point, and I don’t understand the house plot. I still don’t know why the house is haunted. I know why Alice and Ila have trauma but I don’t know what I’m supposed to take from it — that sometimes rape accusations are all in your head? That can’t be right.

Maybe there was a point to this book and maybe it will mean something to someone, help them feel seen. Not me, but I wasn’t the target audience, so…
