The beginning of this book seemed so familiar, I was worried that I’d read this book before. It reminded me of A Tale of Two Castles by Gail Carson Levine. This story was less mysterious, more girl power.

I found Creel to be charming and loved how her natural abilities helped her solve her own problems and eventually became admired by many others. What girl doesn't love beautiful hand-made costuming? Creel is not perfect and her flaws add to my enjoyment of her as if she was a real girl.

This is a great series for pre-teen girls, though it is so fun even young adults can enjoy the story. Creel shows great common sense and courage, something we all could ...

I found this story to be a little more on the young reader side that first thought. It was a very simple story. Had elements of greed, power, and heroics. It was a good read, but I want a little more substance, I don't think I will read the others in the series.

I completely enjoyed Dragon Slipper by Jessica Day George. It’s definitely a princess type story for girls who want spunky heroines and princesses. Creel, the protagonist, is charming, has a mind of her own, takes chances, and is fun. Girls between 9 and 14 will enjoy the book.

Dragon Slippers is the first book in Jessica Day George’s Dragon trilogy. Dragon Flight and Dragon Spear finish the series.

Brief Summary:

Creel is an orphan, being raised by her aunt and uncle. When her aunt comes up with the idea of offering Creel to a dragon so she can then be saved by a prince and become a princess, Creel as well as her uncle and her cousins go along with her because they know that dragons died out hundreds of years ago. It’s clear that Creel’s aunt is a naïve and simple person who persists in an idea until she gets her way. Everyone, except the aunt, believes Creel will return home to them safe and sound without encountering a dragon.
Spoiler
To Creel’s surprise, there is a dragon, who turns out to be somewhat friendly and has no intention of taking Creel hostage or causing a fuss. He wants to remain safely hidden. He also doesn’t have a horde of gold and valuables. He hordes shoes. After making a deal with the dragon, Creel gains a pair of slippers and several dragon friends. In the bargain, the dragons remain safely hidden from human society.

Instead of returning home, Creel heads for the city to make her fortune. What she doesn’t know is that life in the city is difficult and the slippers are much more than they appear to be.

Adventure ensues.

What I liked:

•Creel is spunky, mostly intelligent, bold, and outgoing 15 year old country girl.

•The fairy-tale aspect of the book is engaging and fun.

•Dragon Slippers is a quick read with adventure, dragons, an evil princess, and several interesting characters.

Negative Points:

The plot is sometimes implausible and a little challenging to believe. The biggest problems were:
Spoiler
•believing a dragon would give away a valuable and dangerous pair of slippers;

•understanding why the dragons didn’t warn Creel of the power of the slippers;

•accepting that the younger prince would go out of his way to befriend Creel, a poor, country girl, but it is a fairy tale so it’s easy to overlook this;

•believing that Creel, an intelligent girl, wouldn’t realize sooner that there is something special about the shoes; the reader definitely knows long before she does.

However, I’m reviewing the story from an adult point of view and wanted some sort of reasons for withholding information. I don’t think younger readers would have major problems with these issues, but they might be impatient that Creel is slow to figure out that the slippers are special.

Once the dragons appear, there’s lots of action, adventure, and conflict, making the story interesting and engaging. I’d say most young readers would thoroughly enjoy this story.

Better written than Tuesdays at the Castle, but not quite as loveable. Still really good

 One of my favorite middle-grade fantasy books. Creel is a smart, hard-working, but still feminine main character. I'm a sucker for dragon books too. Heartwarming, interesting world-building, and wonderful characters that I love!

This is a fantastic kids' book. I'm so glad to find another author that I can follow wholeheartedly. I highly recommend it, especially of you're a fan of the dragon-types!

Wow. This book was utterly fantastic! I've dabbled a bit in reading fantasy novels, but I'm still rather new to the genre. I picked this book up because a reading challenge I'm participating in required that a book featuring dragons be read for the month of September, and as the synopsis for Dragonskin Slippers sounded appealing, I chose to give it a shot. I was not disappointed.

This book definitely got my emotions riled up - I had to put it down a few times just because I was so worked up about what was happening in the story. Ms. George truly is an excellent story-teller, and writes in a way that makes it seem like she is not merely telling you a story, but showing you. There were instances when I wasn't even aware I was reading, so lost was I in her words.

Creel was a very like-able protagonist, and her character, along with the other leading characters, was very well fleshed-out. I especially enjoyed reading about the dragons, and how instead of hoarding gold, they each hoarded certain items for collection (such as the dragon Shardas, who hoarded stained-glass windows, or the dragon Feniul, who collected live dogs!) It was a rather a unique take on dragon lore, at least as far as I'm familiar with it.

This novel had action, drama, secrets, backstabbing, strong friendships, a developing romance, and lots of amazing characters - just what any good fantasy story needs. The ending was tied up nicely, but still left me hungry for more. As this is the first book in a trilogy, I'm looking forward to delving into more of Creel's heroic exploits. This book is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a good adventure!

Lots of fun, and gets better as it goes along. Not sure I'll read the sequels, but I'm at least willing to consider them.
