My uncle read this aloud on Christmas Day which apparently he did all the time back in the day but I had no memory of it. It seemed pretty sweet but the treatment of the neighborhood cats at the beginning really threw me off.

I was browsing some lists of classic Christmas books to add to my favorite rotation (The Box of Delights, A Christmas Carol, several devotionals, and The Christmas Story book), and I came across this one. While it is shorter than the others, it is a wonderful piece of Christmas lore that puts you squarely in Wales in the interwar time period. This edition has wonderful illustrations that really bring it to life. I very much enjoyed this short story, which famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas performed live on the radio. And apparently, there is even a BBC version, which is on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrLDaAG7j_o

An evocation of a child's Christmas in Wales within the realm of memory. It is beautiful, warm, embracing, funny and seemingly filled with true glimpses of Dylan Thomas' childhood. It is short, but very rich and flows with rivers merging prose and poetry. Lovely! Highly recommended! Dylan Thomas reads his own story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv4-sgFw3Go
