Not gonna lie, Antimony has never been my favorite Price sibling, so I wasn't really looking forward to a book from her POV. I actually started Magic for Nothing a few years ago and then set it aside about thirty percent into it because Annie was really getting on my nerves. But I thought I'd give it another chance because it's such a fun and interesting series. And I missed it. Plus, the newest book, number nine in the series, follows Sarah and I'm super curious what it's like inside the mind of a Cuckoo. But to get there, I need to read Annie's books first.

Did Annie still irritate me? Yep. But I just embraced the fact that she's got a prickly personality. That it's just a part of her character and I was able to really enjoy the story a whole lot more. And, I've gotta admit, somewhere along the way she really started to grow on me. By the end, I understood her a lot better and could see where she was coming from. Plus, she had a lot of personal growth.

There's some massive fallout from the stunt Verity pulled at the end of Chaos Choreography and Antimony has to clean up the mess her sister made. Because she doesn't look like the rest of the women in her family, Annie's tasked with infiltrating the Covenant of St. George to find out what they're planning for North America and her family. I'll just say that things get complicated real fast.

The stakes have never been higher. Annie's cover could be blown at any time. The tension was off the charts and I couldn't reach the end fast enough. This was another stellar work from Seanan McGuire. I'm anxious to get my hands on the next book.

NOTE: This book does contain some strong language.

Slightly disappointed. There was so much action that the characters suffered a little. It was almost as if McGuire was being pushed to hurry the story along. It was still enjoyable, and there were definitely parts that worked well with me, but I was somewhat let down after all of the anticipation of finally getting to spend time with the youngest Price sibling.

“I thought it would be more like the movies. I’d show up, and say ‘monsters are bad,’ and you’d hand me a crossbow or something.”
“Joss Whedon has so very much to answer for.”

So, I was sure Verity was my favorite a couple of days ago. Now that I've had a few days to let this book sink in, I'm not so sure. I'm pretty excited that the next book in the series focuses on Antimony again. She's down-to-earth, smart and naive all at the same time. She's got some growing up to do, but she's resourseful and knows when to accept help. That's a pretty explosive combination.

The next book comes out in a few days and I'm ready to rip into it to find out what the hell the Price family is going to do?! The Aeslin mice continue to be the best thing ever. Hail!

3 1/2 stars. 6 books in and I'm still enjoying each installment of the InCryptid series. Too many minor points kept me from raving about this installment. Annie seems younger and more naive than her chronological age would lead me to expect. Also, for a family raised training to face dire situations and fight to the death, as well as to know how to lay low, both she and her sister Verity seem to repeatedly make really boneheaded mistakes, including some right out in public. I also didn't find Sam to be very interesting - he was so annoying at first and then just rather bland. In general, I liked it, but I am hoping the next one fixes some of the issues that cropped up in this one.

I loved this book, and 90% of that was Anitmony Price.

One of the things that sometimes rings a bit false to me, or at least a bit unlikeable, is the attitude of Verity, the protagonist of the first two Incryptid novels. She is rather thoughtless and careless sometimes, tends toward being reckless, and seems kind of flippant about very serious situations (she quips all the time and tends to have just a bit much bravado). For the record, I like Verity. She just feels like someone that would drive me crazy irl.

It is nice to see that I was not alone in my thoughts.

Seeing Verity from Antimony's POV was a bit enlightening. Annie is a bit harsh at times, but I can definitely understand why she would be. In her books, Verity makes Annie out to be unstable and a bit of a brat sometimes, but it turns out the younger Price sister is just incredibly dedicated to her cause and to her family. Unlike her older sister (and brother to a much lesser extent), Antimony Price is happy to be who she is and (while not always pumped about the difficulties of her life) enjoys being a cryptozoologist and a defender of cryptids. Unlike her older siblings, Antimony has devoted her life to her family without ever trying to escape them. Verity's ceaseless struggles against the life she was born into seem to Annie like selfish tantrums. I personally don't think she's right at all, but I completely understand why she thinks that way about her sister.

Antimony is (compared to Verity) much more grounded. She has passions, hobbies, and friends, but she would throw every bit of them away to do her duty.

And, over and over in this book, she does.

Annie is quick-witted and clever, loyal and passionate, and usually pretty smart about how she gets things done. She was a pleasure to read about, and I sincerely hope we get another book about her soon.

Shit has just got real for Antimony Price. Thanks to her older sister outing the still-existence of the Price family to the Covenant, she's been shipped off to London to infiltrate the Covenant from the inside.

I never quite took the youngest member of the Price family as seriously, as a Derby girl all of her adventures seemed rather light hearted and she had the typical constitution of a moody teenager. It's a sobering look into life as a Price tho, and a great reminder that almost none of the InCryptid series has a happy ending.

MORE ANTI!
