Really good book - about a character in my lifetime that literally has taken great steps toward changing the world. It makes me sad to think he died - and I'm wishing that the results of the necropsy (why did he die?) would have been revealed... great story even so.

This is a beautiful story about a smart little parrot who proved to us that humans aren't the only beings capable of striking intelligence, empathy, and connection. I loved reading about Alex and his big personality, and especially about all complicated cognitive processes he would sometimes demonstrate in front of Irene with no training. Alex's intelligence and Irene's work at enabling the exposure of this intelligence were wonderful and awe-striking to read about. The story of their work together is a lovely read that will likely deepen your sensitivity to and empathy towards other creatures.

A beautiful book! The story never really ends, as expected of a true story, but Dr Pepperberg's voice is refreshing and a joy to read. Alex's story is also very inspirational, and I'm a complete convert to parrot intelligence now. =)
