No hate to this book, but I haven’t seen a good portion of the movies that the essays talk about. If you’re a queer horror movie buff, I feel like you’d get more enjoyment out of this book.
This is a collection of personal essays that relate to horror. This is NOT a collection of reflective essays on horror. There is such a big difference, and I think I would have enjoyed it more had it not been marketed as the former. I don’t feel comfortable giving it a rating since it is a collection of essays, each by a different writer. Some were very good (Jennifer’s Body, The Blob, and Grace among them). Some were very bad (The Ring…yikes). A lot of these essays felt like reaches and I found myself annoyed and even quite irritated reading them. As a queer person and a horror fan…this just was not it.

Every queer person interested in horror should read this book!
I felt so seen, validated, and understood by the different queer and trans authors of this anthology. The format of focusing on one horror movie and how it was instrumental in that author’s queer journey was fascinating!
My partner and I plan on watching through all the films discussed in this book - then rereading it!

"A working definition of the monstrous: (1) behaviors, appearances, or appetites that are unrecognizably different from one’s own; (2) some invisible forcethat keeps one
apart from others, or some otherness that marks one as though by an invisible force; and (3) someone you would watch die."

A mixed bag, as is the case with any essay collection. There were some that I enjoyed, however the theme of the book seemed to hold others back. There were several essays where it truly felt like they were just adding a paragraph here or there to try and tie into the 'horror' theme, but really wanted to tell an entirely different story.
Still, I thought some of the perspectives were interesting and it makes me want to rewatch a few of the classics with these takes in mind.

As someone interested conceptually in horror but too easily scared to be a proper fan, I liked many of these essays and the diversity of perspectives, but there were just too many. Clearly, the book was trying to cover as much ground as possible, but honestly I think the concept of mixing memoir and theory with horror movies gets worn out by the end.
