Love it! Each chapter is an essay that unpacks connections between society’s approach to the queer community and the ways they’ve been portrayed in classic horror movies. Very interesting but also a little bit scary when describing the movies lol

I debated between giving this a 4 or 3.5, but ultimately chose a 4 star rating. It's complicated because I did really enjoy some of the essays in this book. The big issue I take with It Came from the Closet is that I was given the impression that it would specifically be about queerness, but there were a few that either lightly touched on the subject or did not mention it at all.
Regardless, a majority of the essays were great! Some of them were absolutely profound about the media that it covered and about intersectional experiences. My personal favorites were The Girl, The Well, The Ring, Centered and Seen, and On Beauty and Necrosis. One essay I recommend skipping is Good Guys, Dolls where the author talks about his foster son who is obviously suffering from untreated mental health issues in a way that is very horrible.

Graphic: Ableism, Biphobia, Child abuse, Homophobia, Pedophilia, Racism, Transphobia, Pregnancy, Lesbophobia
Moderate: Chronic illness, Death, Dysphoria
Minor: Suicidal thoughts
I don't typically give star ratings to my non-fiction reads but that is just how good this was.
"We understand what it means to be the monster lurking in the dark, our desire twisted against us until we disgust even ourselves."
"There's a difference between feeling uncomfortable with your own body and having others proclaim how uncomfortable they are with you; between the horror felt by a person and the horror caused by a monster."
