Millennial angst and romance, like a Netflix rom-com.

Didn’t like this one as much as some of her others. Dragged a little for me.

Easy beach read that uses lots of contemporary romance tropes. I didn’t find it laugh out loud funny and felt some plot aspects could have been fleshed out more, but there were some witty lines that made me smile.

”home is my favorite place.”

This slow burn, friends to lovers romance filled with inside jokes, pining and tender moments was such a joy to read! I love how Emily Henry is able to create not only a beautiful love story, but one that also dives into more meaningful topics such as therapy and grief.

I actually loved the back and forth dual timeline aspect and getting to see how their friendship blossomed over the years and the current day chapters showing the aftereffects of their fractured relationship with Poppy & Alex finding their way back to each other.

I just can’t wait to pick up more from EH❤️

Poppy is a pretty standard wild child, desperate to get out of her hometown after experiencing some bullying (for what? I don't think we are ever clued in on this, and it feels weird that something the so directly impacted the characters mindset is not really fully thought out). She's working as full time traveler for a magazine, and is in a rut. Her relationship with her best friend and summer travel partner, Alex, is strained because of something that had happened two years ago. They are trying to start fresh now.

Alex is.... boring. He's definitely neurodivergent, likes things done a certain way, very short with what he has to say but so incredibly caring. He has some fantastic funny lines and jokes that I wish bring his character to life more, because he pretty much is a doormat for Poppy to walk all over. Henry only writes from Poppy's perspective, so we don't get insight on to what he is thinking and why he acts the way he does.

I liked the format Henry writes in, flashing back and forth from different summers. I think if the book were written chronologically in some sort of aspect, it would have been significantly less entertaining though. The friends to lovers trope was fine, I think this was a good way to do it, showing the time passing made them feel more platonic at the beginning overall.

It was frustrating to read at times what was really clear that Alex was into Poppy. The way they just consistently not say anything to one another is absolutely wild and that they ignore any communications on how they're feeling. She seems to be aware that he was constantly just waiting for her to be ready to be with him (which is annoying) but she didn't want to break his heart by committing to him and then regretting or resenting him. He seemed to just exist for her, there was little pushback from him about what he wanted. Overall, I think some of it could have been done better that would have made the book better overall, because the concept was fine, but it just fell flat.
