A gorgeous style, often very poetic while still pragmatic, and a lot of humor. Despite what the back cover of my edition focused on, i.e. her rape at the age of 8, this is not the focus of the book. It is just one sad moment that defines some years of her childhood, and it's hard to read because she exposes all the ambiguity she was confronted with, but she still decides to tell the tale of the powerful encounters she makes, and how she becomes the first black tramway car driver in SF. A beautiful and important read.

i will forever be in love with a memoir ESPECIALLY when it is written so eloquently. i dont really have words to articulate my thoughts but i will say i left this book feeling hopeful but sorrowful.

The fact that the adult American Negro female emerges a formidable character is often met with amazement, distaste and even belligerence. It is seldom accepted as an inevitable outcome of the struggle won by survivors and deserves respect if not enthusiastic acceptance.

The first volume of Maya Angelou’s autobiography is beautiful.
