Many readers of Calvino cite this as a favorite. But to me, it is sentimental, pandering, and too thinly developed for a book of this length. I think Calvino was still struggling to find his proper form here.

Ever since I read If On a Winter's Night a Traveler, I've wanted to read something else by Calvino. This book didn't disappoint. It wasn't as great as Traveler but still really good. It's the story of Cosimo, who in a fit of teenage rebellion, climbs into a tree and never come down. He spends the rest of his life living among the trees and traveling through their branches. He manages to have a very full life, including hunting, assisting with crops, and having love affairs. It got a little sluggish towards the end as it tried to wrap everything up, but it was still well worth reading. The author obviously loved books and integrates this love into the story.

Dalla mia recensione su Temperamente:[...] Siamo abituati a guardarci intorno e avere tutto a portata d’occhio.

One of Calvino’s earlier works. He is an amazing writer so everything he writes is worth reading. However, this is definitely not his best work (My favorites remain Cosmicomics and t zero). I wouldn’t start reading Calvino with this book.

Although it seems to be a frivolous fairy tale, it is actually a quite depressing take on love, politics, and humanity in general, particularly towards the latter part of the book. Perhaps the pessimism is a reflection on his disillusionment with Communism (apparently he wrote it right after his break with the Italian Communist party).

I bought three calivno books at a yard sale this summer, this is the first i have read. Calvino is a poetic story teller, easy to read, and engaging. The book is almost a folk fantasy, but grounded in very real human experience and emotion, which validates the plot and characters. I liked it a lot.
