"A haunting is like anything else in life. Impossible to prepare for. So it's better not to have expectations." I've been a fan of Emily Carroll for a while ever since reading 'Through the Woods' a few years ago. 'A Guest in the House' is a brand new horror graphic novel that is breathtaking. With some of the most hauntingly beautiful spreads & panels I've seen in a Graphic Novel in ages!
A Haunted House novel that deals with trauma, loss & loneliness. Emily is very much in a league of her own.

"I just can't shake the feeling there's a guest in the house, and I am being a terrible hostess."

Abby recently married David, and with him came his daughter, Crystal, and a messy past. But things are okay now, it's the 90s, David has a steady job as a dentist, Abby works part-time at the local grocery, and Crystal will heal from the grief in her own time. Except there's something in the house, and Abby can't shake the feeling she's being a bad hostess not letting it in.

Emily Carroll is a WONDER. I don't think she has ever crafted something I've disliked, and this is no exception. This was a phenomenal graphic novel, mixing black and white with vibrant, bleeding pages of color that spurred the narrative onward. The mix between reality and something else was done masterfully, seeping into a surrealist, magical fiction that played with the storyline so well.

These are the kinds of graphic novels I yearn to pick up over and over again. Carroll's lyricism and words are something to behold. The way she crafts a story and then uses art to not only enhance it, but ground it, is really my favorite part. I know I'm in for a treat when I hear she has new work coming out, and I'll always be a massive fan. I can't wait for what comes next, but I'll be rereading this one over and over again.

Drawings are gorgeous, sucks you in, twist at the end…. But too sad and scary for me personally.

I'm stunned. I don't know what to say. This book made me sob at my public library. It is beautiful. I'm haunted by it. I don't know what the ending means but I know I'll be thinking about it.
