NOTHING HAPPENS!

I really dislike these kinds of books. Nothing really happens, none of the characters actually change or learn anything, they're all annoying and don't have redeeming traits, and they talk in circles all the time!

I get why it's a classic and why some people will like it. But it's not for me.

This is the second Hemingway novel I’ve read, the first being The Old Man and the Sea, and although it was often a fun read, it certainly didn’t meet my expectations for the book that defined the “lost generation”. Hemingway is a fantastic lifestyle writer. The best part of this book is the anthropology of upper class expatriate life in Europe. It definitely makes me want to travel. His style is easily digested while also very intentional and lovely, and the way he writes dialogue is incredible. There’s also a sense of melancholy that permeates even the most exciting scenes in the book, like the fiesta and bull fights in Pamplona. It was hard to feel bad for Jake; I understood their group’s distaste for Cohn towards the end but it’s difficult to sympathize with them when they’ve been so awfully antisemitic to Cohn since the beginning. The novel feels to me like a mirror of Hemingway’s expatriate life: colored by alcoholism, hedonistic, and wealthy. Glad I read it but not a favorite.

2.5
Ok yes I only read half this book but I also read half of another book so I’m letting this one count so I have a win.
This books prose isn’t interesting enough to compensate for how boring it is. If we were headed in a direction or if the characters were more interesting maybe I would persevere.
That being said there is a little something about little Ernest’s style that makes me intrigued about his other work, which is why I’m rating this three.

The other book I read half of was to kill a kingdom. This little stupid ya romantasy disaster. That failed to do its only job, which is to have romance. I was sitting here like this is banter I guess but nothing is progressing. so I skipped around the second half of the book trying to see where this was heading and it was all so predictable I decided not to waste my time with it. Maybe I’m out of my ya fantasy era. Unfortunately ya fantasy era me bought way to many ya fantasy books so we will be here again

I've enjoyed other books by Hemingway, so I assumed I would like this one as well. I endured it, but wasn't much of a fan. I get the point and why it was so risque in 1926, but I can't say I really enjoyed it. I suppose I am better for having read it.
