This was a great thriller. I was hooked from the beginning. I had some suspicions on who it might be, and my suspicions were correct but still took me by surprise.

Really enjoyed this, lots of twists and turns, but towards the end it started to drag I thought.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. After reading some of these reviews I feel a bit inadequate because it seems like everyone guessed the ending except for me!!!! I truly did not see ANY of it coming. I guess because I don’t often read mystery/thrillers I didn’t catch on to the tropes? Or maybe I’m not as perceptive as I thought I was. Regardless, not knowing the ending definitely made this book a page-turner. If you’re like me and your only exposure to thrillers is Verity and watching criminal minds, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the plot.

It seems like a lot of people hated the protagonist as well. There were certainly one or two silly mistakes in the details (like when she said she got her PhD and would eventually get her masters??? Isn’t it usually the other way around?) but that didn’t bother me much. I also didn’t see her as an unreliable narrator like everyone else did. So what she occasionally has a Xanax with a glass of wine? That’s not enough to create psychosis or wild hallucinations as far as I know. What I’m trying to say is: I liked her. She was trying her best, just like all of us are. And I empathize with her for not wanting to reveal the ugly parts of her psyche to her fiancé, or anyone for that matter. That’s a very real and difficult issue to resolve within oneself but it’s so worth it if you’re brave enough to do it. And I’m proud of her for developing that bravery, even if it was a slow process. It always is. That’s life!

SPOILER ALERT…

I honestly don’t blame Daniel for keeping such a huge secret from her. She was essentially doing the same to him, just about different things. His sister, her paranoia. Both secrets have a certain gravity. And people with secrets attract people with secrets. We often pick our mirrors to fall in love with. That’s why I think they are actually perfect for each other. Because they both have such an amazing opportunity to grow together. Of course they had to break up after that ordeal, but I really wanted them to eventually get back together.

The reason I’m giving it 3.5 instead of 4 stars is because at the end where it skipped into the future I thought it would be the point where they get back together (or at least some indication that they would, like him inviting her inside for example) and I was SO disappointed when it just ended with no resolution to the romantic thread in the story. That was very lame, IMHO. When stories end that way, it makes the whole thing seem fake to me. In real life, the story always continues. If there’s no indication of their lives continuing after the end of the story it shocks me into realizing they’re just characters in a fake story in a fake world, which is always disappointing once I’ve put hours into reading that world into existence in my head. Oh well. It was still a good story and I very much enjoyed reading it.

Great work and thank you Stacy Willingham!
