Salvation in Death

dark mysterious tense fast-paced

This time Eve Dallas tries to find a killer who murdered a priest by poisoning his communal wine before a funeral mass. Then they find out the man wasn’t a priest at all, but was a former gang member and murderer himself who had stolen the priest’s identity. As usual, her husband Roarke becomes involved in the investigation through the thinnest of pretexts. If you like the “In Death” series, you’ll like this book. But unfortunately there’s nothing new here. None of the characters progress to anything. I predict Robb will start losing fans unless she starts bringing something new to the table. A pregnancy for Eve maybe, or finding out more about her mother’s identity. Until then, she’s just writing the same book with a different bad guy each time. But hey, I’m a sucker for the characters, and the witty dialogue.

In Salvation in Death, Catholic priest Father Miguel Flores is poisoned by the communion wine during a funeral. Except he's not actually Miguel Flores, but Lino Martinez, a gangster turned con artist with a seriously nefarious past.

I think this is my least favorite of the In Death books. It's a clever idea, with the false priest and the dramatic death, but it seems to fall flat. For whatever reason, this book doesn't seem to be as compelling for me as the other books. I can't put my finger on why. It's not bad, though. None of the In Death books are bad, but this one is more mediocre than most.

A good mystery.

I really liked this one. A priest dies during a high profile funeral mass, Eve starts to have instincts on a direction but then another high profile preacher dies during a televised service
Spoiler we later learn that it was a copy cat and opportunistic murder. So Eve's instincts are not completely off. As the plot thicken we find that money is involved and multiple people knew the really identity.
The oh, so nice and helpful priest is not as good as he seems.
Spoiler He blackmail people with their confessions, while waiting for his pay day. He also get back together with his old girlfriend from the gang. So if he thought he was doing good deeds, his idea of good was very skewed.
So throughout the investigation, Eve or others would look at Roarke with questions about the religion and he kept saying, "what are you looking at me for?" As he knew nothing about the religion in which, he might have been baptized as a baby. After the first time, you would think that would stop, but as Roarke is the holder of knowledge, he knows very little here. Eve actually out paces him.

SpoilerOne of my pet peeves, a woman, actually a pawn and a woman master mind, as the killer. I think I gave it a pass as the MM was a childhood gang member that never got out of that mind set.

This was a slower book in the series for me. It talks a lot about gang life, which has never been very interesting to me. But it's still worth a read, as there are some fun/funny/sweet moments. And I always love seeing how much Eve feels about things.

3.5 Stars.
