Well I liked this book a little better than the first one, but I still think it's far from King's best work. it was still cliché and the suspense factor was only so-so. But the dialogue isn't nearly as stunted and the pace is much improved. plus this book had more interesting characters. If the series continues to improve at this rate, it might turn out to be worth the read.

I already know Stephen king books aren’t for me. So far I’ve not enjoyed a single one. (Maybe I’ve been reading the wrongs ones.) I only read this because my colleague lend me his books and he is really sweet and loves Stephen King. And because I don’t want to disappoint him I decided to read it.

However after 25% I already knew I was going to hate it. I looked up the synopsis which sounded really interesting to me but the execution is just not my thing. Stephen King writes very a detailed plot which A LOT of details. Like A LOT. So much that I just do not care. Most details don’t feel really relevant to the story and just don’t pull me into the book. Which is a shame.

It might be because my attention span is fucked up. A book needs to be constantly stimulating for me to enjoy it. I don’t really enjoy a slow world building or a slow developing plot line if there is just nothing happening for several pages. And that’s the case unfortunately with King’s books.

Now that’s just a me problem. I do know that lots of people who have better attention spans than I do enjoy his books and if you do I’m happy for you! Unfortunately for me it’s not my type of books.

I liked this second installment in The Dark Tower Series. As always Stephen King produced a well written book.
While Gunslinger was set mainly in an “otherworld†while this book bounced between New York and a beach where the Roland was pretty quickly incapacitated due to large lobster like creatures. Roland spends the entire book trying to recover from the attack and we are introduced to two new characters while also being looped back to characters from the first installment.
I did not like the overuse of racial slurs and swear words, I think it was a tad excessive. Other than that though I liked the back and forth between the city and the beach scenes and that Roland was shown to struggle.

A much better installment than ‘The Gunslinger’ in my opinion. The character Eddie really makes this book shine for me. He adds quite a bit of humor, and fun scenarios into the story, which I thought was a bit lacking in the first book.
The traveling between worlds was very interesting, and kept the story moving. Roland out of his element is always fun, and his absolute lack of understanding for most of our common household items always gave me a good chuckle.
The part that worked the least for me was Odetta/Detta. Her world jump was a bit slow, and some of the writing was a bit shocking. I guess that kinda goes with the era she’s supposed to be in. I will say I’m excited for the future books, and her involvement knowing how she has transitioned. She really didn’t start to shine until they reached her and Eddie’s solo adventure to the 3rd door.
Cannot wait to continue reading this series of books.

In some ways it was hard to believe this was connected to the Gunslinger at all. It read like a completely different book and it fulfilled much of the promise that the Gunslinger hinted at. On to the waste lands!

As a true Stephen King fan, I believe that this is part of one of the greatest fantasy works in King's career. All 7 of the Dark Tower books are fantastic, each one drawing you into the dark crevices of Roland's journey.
