A thrilling and perfectly set-up heist movie in a book format, with more likeable characters and a plot that goes beyond, 'watch people go through lasers'. The cast is beautiful and interesting, the magic system is something to behold, and from the beginning you find yourself desperately hoping the best for the characters you meet.

it has all the characteristics of a great fiction novel but it felt rushed. the characters are underdeveloped and so is the plot, which is too bad because the world building is cool and the characters are super diverse

The world building and character development in this book is absolutely phenomenal; I felt like I was immersed in the characters' universe while reading. I would describe the writing style as very detail-oriented and descriptive, with lots of dialogue interspersed. I loved the characters' friendships with one another and I appreciated the humorous interlude jokes included in the book as a way to ease the tension from the action and suspense that was happening. The only reason I took off half a star was because there was one part of the ending that I didn't like but aside from that, this was a very enjoyable read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading fantasy and adventure books!

I didn’t hate this book (as many in my book club did), but to say it was well written would be a lie. That being said, if I sort of closed my eyes halfway and suspended my disbelief about the many many many elements of the story that didn’t make sense, I dare say I enjoyed the ride.

Team heist/romp in fantastical world. A bit of Indiana Jones puzzle thrown in. Felt a little rushed, chaotic, deus ex for me, but certainly fun.

Having trouble tracking the dynamics of the group since they’re already a team when the book begins. Also, for the audiobook, one of the narrators has a very flat affect which conflicts with the liveliness of the other narrator’s portions.

This book has an ensemble of character and the principal protagonist, Séverin, is the least interesting of them all. I hope the future books focus more on the others because I like them far more.

Overall, I liked this book but didn’t love it. I started by listening to the audiobook, but I switched to a physical copy (The narrators of the audiobook gave every character a fake French accent. This was grating and at times impeded by understanding of the dialogue and therefore, the story). The ending dragged a tad bit. That said, I love the world Chokshi built and I may read further.
