Ugh this is hard to rate.
Incredible representation and handling of challenging issues of the time.
Really great storyline and plot (love a good heist).
However, the writing did not seem good to me. There were multiple instances where things didn't add up, things that happened shouldn't have been possible because of something we'd been told earlier that the author and editors seemingly forgot. My edition (OwlCrate - could be part of the issues, but not all) literally had words missing multiple times, and another misspelled. And just in general, it was hard to imagine what was happening. A great story, but so hard to get into when you're constantly trying to decipher wtf is going on in a scene.
I will read book 2, but jeez I hope the writing is better (and the editing)...

An exciting read, novel plot, and intriguing diversity of character tropes and backgrounds. Occasionally the plot advances faster than the reader can fully understand.

I wanted to like this book - I have really got into this genre of alternative fiction - however this one just could not hold me - there were too many details that did not add to the understanding of the story and although I felt that the story was trying to present different characters and story lines they did not feel like they were really challenging the status quo. Ultimately neither the world of the story nor the characters captured me.

It started out good, I was interested in the developments of the story and the world building. But from the middle on I didn't care for the characters nor the plot. I didn't feel the urge to pick it up again so that speaks for itself as well...
The book started a reading slump for me :(

EDIT: I had to go back and do a proper review and give it the justice it deserves! This book had everything I could have asked for, honestly: found family, a diverse cast of genuinely well written characters (with clearly established goals!), compelling magic system and elements of history. Roshani Chokshi understands how to get the audience rooting for her characters, and unlike many fantasy books with multiple point of views, I was never bored of the perspective I was reading. No matter where I was or whose story I was following, it was always exactly where I wanted to be. And not to mention!!! Just how GOOD the dialogue is. Every character has their own distinct charms, mannerisms, ways of speaking-- I cannot gush enough about how much I loved these characters. It genuinely scratched an itch in my brain just having this ensemble cast to root and cry for. Haven't been this properly invested in a series in what feels like forever so I'm all too excited to continue.

And an honorary mention goes to Enrique who has somehow shot up my favourite character ranking. The inclusion of the Philippines in any fantasy book makes me so immensely happy

Usually I love heist books, but this one was overly complicated and felt superfluous in it's plot devices and characters. The ending was pretty confusing because all the characters started acting totally different from how they were in the chapter prior.
