I picked this up because of the hilarious ninja assassin stories of The Mundane Life of Kenneth Shuri in the [b:Flight, Vol. 4|247330|Flight, Vol. 4 (Flight, #4)|Kazu Kibuishi|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1390493154s/247330.jpg|239626] series. While the illustrations were just as great, the story wasn't for me. It was a strange setting...apparently in our world, but with just a few hints of other-ness that were never really addressed. Like having a bear as your drummer (another band had a badger). The vast majority of the story was about Askel, the lead singer & guitarist, dealing with his insecurities, his crumbling relationship, his awful singing, and his insatiable search to make others FEEL the music like he does. And then there's this weird mystic stuff thrown in at the end w/ monsters. I think this book is best appreciated by people who were actually in bands. It's likely well done, but ultimately I didn't connect with the characters. If nothing else, I felt more sympathetic to Askel's ignored girlfriend.

Scott Pilgrim on acid. I didn’t really enjoy this but it was really well executed so it has my respect.

Vahvaa tykitystä alusta loppuun. JP Ahosen tyyli on tuttu Villimmästä Pohjolasta, josta pidän kovasti, ja tuntuu, että tämän okkultistisen musiikkiaiheen parissa mies on KP Alareen kanssa kotonaan. Soittokohtauksissa kuva herää todella eloon. Stoori on muutenkin sopivan pimeä, bändin rytmiryhmänä toimii esimerkiksi vanha hippi ja karhu. Kirjaimellisesti. Hauska, hyvin piirretty, dynaaminen ja jännittävä - mitäpä muuta sarjakuvalta voisi toivoa. Hienoa työtä.

I liked the premise of this, and the artwork was pretty good (though a bit dark for my taste). Unfortunately, I was a bit confused at times, and I felt like either things weren't explained well, or my brain was not fully operational.

I bought this book for the cover.  It made me think Rock Stars fight evil monsters.  While that is technically true, that only happens in that last 30 pages.  Most of the book is spent on Aksel coming to terms with not being the best lead singer for his band, and that the rock and roll lifestyle he so wants, is harder to attain while keeping your musical identity then he ever thought possible.  Aksel lives with his girlfriend who is in college, where he is supposed to be.  But she is growing and realizing that there are read world things she wants/needs to do, while Aksel seems stuck in a wannabe mode.    This book spent way too much time exploring Axel and his goals for the band. It is quite drawn out and boring, even though the setting is anything but.  They have a bear for a drummer!  A real bear (anthropomorphic).  Plus “grandpa” who is always talking about the bands he used to perform with is a hoot.  The music listed in various places in this book is awesome, I just wish the story was.  When you finally get to the band destroys monsters part, it fells rushed and like was put in there to sell books.  There is a reason this book does not have a sequel.  Overall, this book was okay, but I wanted way more.

This was an impulse pick up from the library. There were interesting thoughts about the nature of music and its powerful effects. Magical realism setting in Finland. (Maybe I don't fully appreciate the European culture and insight here.) But the art is cartoonish and fluid in a beautiful way.

Mahtavasti piirretty, hupaisa ja yllättävä sarjis. Pidän valtavasti JP Ahosen huumorista ja piirrostyylistä niin Belsebubzissa kuin tässäkin.
