I think I did this book/series a disservice by jumping into it too quickly after Morningstar. If I had taken a break I know for a fact I would’ve gotten over the different pacing/ character POV switches a lot quicker because by the end of it I was heavily invested in each character which I don’t think is easy to pull off.

I won’t lie, the reset from the first trilogy to a beginning of a new era for Darrow had me DRAGGGGINGGGGGGGG. I was not as captivated as I wanted to be. Being the avid reader who can blaze through a book in a few days, I struggled with this book and it took me almost a month to get through it.

However, will I finish the series? Of course. The first trilogy had its ups and downs - so I am not giving up hope on the second tetralogy, but I need the pace to pick up.

This book for me was the definition of “let him cook”. I could not get into it for the first third of the book. Like at all. To be fair I had just started a new job and that certainly impacted how much I read. But the book itself didn’t really grip me. The new POV’s were tough to get into, and Darrow made some choices that I had some trouble with.

I struggled. But thankfully there was a turn around. By the end of the book I was fully invested in all the new POV’s, most of all by Lysander and Lyria. Darrow has to make some things right for me, and as it stands he was my least favorite POV this book.

After reading the book I was glad to have spent more time in this world and I am excited to continue with this series. That is not something I would have expected me to say after starting this book.
