This was a reread for me. After reading it the first time 15 years ago, I was terrified (I’m easily scared) and also awed.
The elements of madness and sadness are so deep and so good. The love stories of husband and wife, brother and brother, father and son, sister and sister are all so touching and so painful.
The long boy with the endless piebald side will never die in my mind.
Stephen King’s best work.

This is my second time “reading” this book. The first time, I listened to it as an audio book read by Mare Winningham. For whatever reason I actually enjoyed listening to this more than reading it. (Mare Winningham did a fabulous job!)
Either way, like most Stephen King books, this was a good one. I may be biased as Stephen King is my favorite author.

"The looneybins are full of people like me. OUR dreams harness US, and they whip us with soft whips -- oh, lovely whips -- and we run and we run, always in the same place ... because the ship ... Lisey, the sails never open and the ship never weighs its anchor ..."
Stephen King is one of my favourite authors -- and yet, I really didn't love this one. It's well written, of course, but the language got on my nerves quite a bit -- all the cutesy nicknames and made up words from the language pool. Don't get me wrong, there are moments but they are really too few and far between. I get that this was a story about a widow looking back on her crazy life with her novelist husband. I also get that it is about sisterhood and family and mental health. I also get that families do have their own language. Alas for me, I never became fully invested in the story. This is a re-read for me and I remembered barely anything from my last sitting. That should have been telling. This will not be a book I will sit down with ever again.
Can we talk about this gorgeous cover? Beautiful!!
I follow the path of the Beam as I continue my re-reads/reading of Stephen King's novels.

Spannend, aangrijpend en een heel intiem boek. Ik vind het echt een totaal ander boek van Stephen King, hoewel er weer genoeg wreedheid en pure doodsangst in zit. Mooi!
