I suppose I should have started with The Dry, but the audiobook of this book came available first! This is the second book in a series about a detective, Aaron Falk. In this book, one of his contacts for a corporate investigation goes missing during a team-building weekend in the Australian wilderness. What really happened to Alice?

Language: I listened to the audio of this book, and profanity always slips by me a little more on audio - I believe there was one use of the f-word, several uses of Jesus's name in vain (which I absolutely hate), and other more minor cuss words.

Sexual Content: References to teenage sex. Pornographic pictures and videos of a teen are spread around a school, but they aren't really described. In one part a man notices his colleagues long legs.

Other: This is a thriller/murder mystery, so some descriptions of bodies - nothing too gruesome, but maybe more details than necessary. Obviously some violence. Some references to anorexia.

My Thoughts: I actually really enjoyed this book, more than I thought I would! I kept finding things to do around my house so I could keep listening to the story. The narrator was great, with an Australian accent, which is always fun for us Americans I think. The book moved along at a nice pace, and was overall fairly clean (aside from the language issue). What I liked best was that the detective was really a good guy in this book. I like books where the hero is actually the hero, and not some person on the edge of being a criminal. I thought the characters were developed well. My only complaint was that it was a little hard to keep all the female characters straight in audio format, but I managed. I think I'd recommend this one if you are looking for a good thriller/mystery!

The second book from Jane Harper read straight after "the Dry" and did not disappoint . A truly atmospheric thriller demonstrating an intimate knowledge of what it is to be "lost in the bush". Great character s who were all ill-equiped physically and emotionally to deal with being lost in the bush. Not totally plausible but nonetheless a fast paced read. Read in 2 days.

I liked it, but I didn't like any of the characters other than Falk and Carmen. It was hard to feel sorry for the women as they were all so unlikeable.

After I finished Jane Harper's The Dry, I quickly raced to pick up her new release, Force of Nature. Force of Nature has been getting a lot of attention in the past couple of weeks since it's release, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the book that everyone has been claiming to like even more than The Dry (which I quite enjoyed and rated at 4 stars).

Unfortunately, though this story was also well written, I just couldn't get into it the way that I could with the previous book. Maybe it was just the overabundance of bitchy women characters and stress-induced catfights, but I just didn't love this one as much, and I didn't feel connected to any particular character other than Aaron Falk, the police officer. In a story where time is of the utmost importance, I felt like the slow-paced plot development worked against the anticipation that could have been better built up. All-in-all, Force of Nature is still a good read, and I'm rounding up my stars because I am fairly certain that I would have liked this book more if I'd have put a bit more time between reading this one and The Dry.

I like this series, but this one didn't grab me the way The Dry did.
